R.I.P. Peace Corps Volunteer Kate Puzey, Murdered in Benin

kate.JPGVery sad news from West Africa: 24-year-old Kate Puzey, a PCV from Georgia, was found murdered in her village in Benin. I’m told that the entire nation is mourning, and villagers are outraged that this could happen. The best round-up of links by far—including Kate’s blog and online photo albums—is Xeni Jardin’s BoingBoing post here.

According to the Fallen Peace Corps Volunteers Memorial Project,  “more than 180,000 Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 138 countries” since John F. Kennedy created the program in 1961.  “Of these dedicated men and women, 274 have sacrificed not only their energies and time, but also their lives while pursuing the Peace Corps mission.”

The Kate Puzey Memorial Fund has been established “to help causes Puzey believed in,” her father said. Donations can be sent to: c/o Smith, Gambrell, and Russel, LLP, Suite 3100, 1230 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30309-3592.
